On and over a blue disc 1 13/16 inches (4.60 cm) in diameter with a 7/16 inch (1.11 cm) golden orange border an Arabic number 3 in white 1 11/16 inches (4.29 cm) in height members 1/4 inch (.64 cm) in width in bend sinister shaded in red perspective with a white star 9/16 inch (1.43 cm) in diameter charged with a red disc in lower loop.
The winged star is symbolic of the Army Air Forces and the Arabic numeral 3 indicates the units numerical designation.
The shoulder sleeve insignia was approved on 1 September 1943.
